Cancer continue to grow unless one of four things occurs:
- The cancerous mass is removed by a surgeon
- Chemotherapy or another type of cancer - specific medication, such as hormonal therapy, is given to the person with cancer
- A person with cancer receives radiation therapy
- The cancer cells shrink and disappear on their own. This last event, while extremely rare, can occur with some melanomas (a type of skin cancer) or some kidney cancers
